What is an Opioid? 

An opioid is a type of drug that includes prescription pain medicines like oxycodone and morphine, as well as illegal drugs like heroin. These drugs help reduce pain but also cause high risk for addiction and overdose.

What is drug misuse? 

Taking medication the wrong way is called drug misuse. This includes taking a prescription that isn't yours and taking too much. Even using opioids as prescribed can lead to addiction.

An age‑adjusted rate is a way to measure and compare health problems between groups as if everyone were the same age. It makes comparisons fair when one group is younger or older than another.
